Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has no qualms fielding Chris Smalling against Marseille tonight.

Ferguson claims Smalling is ahead of schedule.

"Chris is a young lad who has come to United and has played immediately. We bought him for the future but we are delighted with what he has achieved so far," said the Scot.

"He enjoys defending which is a great asset to have. So far his transition has been very easy for him. He's done very well."
