"I think that's a fair result," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "We could have lost the game and there were periods in the second half where we had to change the back four and we could have lost two or three goals.
"But the nature of our club is we never give in and that's a marvellous quality to have at this time of year and they proved that again today.
"They're not going to give up at any stage of any game without a fight, and they never did, and they could have won it."
Ferguson was complimentary of a Middlesbrough side that belied their league position while calling for his players to maintain their concentration as the season approaches its conclusion.
"I thought it was a fantastic game of football. The pace of the game was marvellous, it was a really good game and you have got to give credit to our opponents."
"We got a point and I looked upon this as a difficult fixture", continued Ferguson.
"They don't get big crowds often and the only time they get really big crowds is when one of the big four come and I think that helps the players to raise their performance.
"I expected that, but we had enough quality to win the match and there were periods when I thought we were going to win it, but in the context of the whole game I think a draw was a fair result.
"I think I've been saying for a while that the most consistent team would win it and we've got to retain that consistency we've shown in the last few weeks."
