Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Wayne Rooney's performance in victory at Newcastle United.

The Manchester United manager described his side's performance as "absolutely brilliant" and highlighted Rooney's influence.

He added: "He's getting fitter all the time. Some of his football was terrific. He likes to work a bit more forward, but we set up the diamond with him in the middle of the pitch. It gives different options."
