Man Utd boss Ferguson: Rooney 8-9 weeks away

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has reaffirmed his belief that Wayne Rooney will be out for just over two months.

The England star is resigned to missing up to 12 key games for club and country, including the start of United's Champions League campaign.

However, Ferguson confirmed the injury does not appear to be as serious as Rooney's previous two broken metatarsals and is optimistic about the 21-year-old's recovery time.

"It is only a hairline bit with any kind of fracture, you have to make sure it is dealt with properly.

"It is always difficult to be accurate because everyone is different. I think he should be back playing in eight or nine weeks."
