Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he offered players to Rangers - but the Scottish giants couldn't afford them.
Ferguson found out for himself how tight money was at Ibrox when he offered two of his players out on loan, only to be rebuffed on financial grounds.
"I couldn't believe it when he told me what the debt was," Ferguson said of Gers boss Walter Smith. "Even last season I offered him two players on loan and he couldn't take them, even for salaries.
"It is a terrible predicament they have got and a challenge for him to do it with more or less the same players. But they won the league again last season and you have to give it to the manager.
"Walter has galvanised them and made a silk purse out of a sow's ear really. You always have to respect a team with their history and tradition."
