Man Utd boss Ferguson: Players desperate for FA Cup success

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits his players are desperate for FA Cup success.

Of United's current squad, only Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs have tasted success in the tournament - Fletcher in 2004 and Giggs in 2004, 1999, 1996 and 1994. But the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney, despite their long service at Old Trafford, still haven't pocketed a winner's medal.

"It's probably a motivating force for the players who haven't got medals," admitted Sir Alex ahead of Sunday's crunch clash.

"Particularly someone like Rio Ferdinand. He mentioned to me last season that he hadn't got an FA Cup medal and I couldn't believe it, given the length of time he has been at the club.

"We had a good period [of winning the FA Cup] in the 1990s and we beat Millwall [2004]. But you have to say we were particularly unlucky in two finals, particularly the Arsenal final [2005] and losing a late goal to Chelsea [2007]. So we haven't carried much luck in those two finals.

"Everyone likes to win the FA Cup at least once in their life."
