The England international built his reputation at Bayern Munich as a holding midfielder, where his displays earned him a £17million move to Old Trafford in the summer.

A nagging knee problem has hampered his progress with the Red Devils, but he produced one his best performances for the club in the midweek UEFA Champions League victory over Roma.

Ferguson said: "I wanted to leave Paul Scholes out against Roma and play with three central midfielders.

"Owen was given a different type of role, which he absolutely excelled at. He was our star man.

"It was no surprise to be honest as he has marvellous pace.

"I remember him playing for England against Portugal. He was driving forward throughout the game and getting beyond their midfield.

"There are a variety of roles Owen can play, without question. He has the intelligence and application to adapt."
