Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes last season's Carling Cup triumph was the making of midfielder Darron Gibson.
Ferguson, writing in his match programme notes for the Cup win over Wolves, said: "Darron came on as a substitute in the opening round against Middlesbrough, set up Ryan Giggs for the vital second goal in a 3-1 win and stayed in the side to play in every round to the final against Spurs.
"I am sure the Republic of Ireland took due note of his progress at a higher level on his way to winning four caps for his country."
