Manchester United are prepared to compete with Barcelona for Ajax striker Luis Suarez.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has had the Uruguay international scouted regularly this season and he is considering a major bid for the prolific forward, who has admitted hopes of playing for Barca this week.

Marca says that won't put off Ferguson, though he sees Suarez as a backup target for his priority, which is Valencia ace David Villa.

Villa is also wanted by Chelsea, but would prefer a move to Old Trafford.

If United cannot agree a deal for Villa, they will turn to Ajax ace Suarez.
