Man Utd boss Ferguson: Champions League losing European influence

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has highlighted how the Champions League is becoming dominated by non-European talent.

"I think it says a lot that there are more Scots playing in the Champions League this season than there are English players," said Ferguson. "How much influence the number of foreigners playing in England has on the England team I am not so sure of, but I am certain there is at least some impact on the national side.

"We all have our own ideas about the merits of the Academy system in this country and whether it produces enough top-quality players. But the amount of non-European players in the Champions League is worrying for national teams.

"Someone told me this week there are more than 80 Brazilian players in the squads of clubs of the Champions League this season, so of course they are going to benefit from that."
