Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says Fabio Capello was right to overlook LA Galaxy's David Beckham for his first England squad.

Fergie said: "I am not surprised. Fabio says he is not match fit and that's why he has not picked him, so it is straightforward.

"You have to think of Fabio's position. He has to win that game against Switzerland.

"He has come with a great CV and reputation and this will be his first game as England boss, so it is an important game for him.

"He has laid down a marker quite firmly that he wants players who are match fit and David is not."
