Former Newcastle United winger Keith Gillespie has revealed Manchester United wanted to buy him back six months after his move.
Gillespie has revealed how Manchester United tried to buy him back from Newcastle United - just six months after signing for the Magpies in the ground breaking deal which took Andy Cole to Old Trafford and saw the popular winger head to St James' Park.
Gillespie revealed in his new book, 'How Not To Be A Football Millionaire': "Andrei Kanchelskis leaving Man United to join Everton a month before the new season left a vacancy on the right wing.
"Becks stepped into the breach.
"He was not the only option Ferguson had considered in the summer of 1995.
"Six months after letting me go, he tried to buy me back."
He recalled getting a call from his old United manager.
"Keith, it's Alex Ferguson..."
"I leapt across the room to grab the handset and got there just in time.
"True to form, he got to the point quickly.
"He explained Andrei Kanchelskis was on the way out and he had been chatting with his staff about possible replacements.
"Brian Kidd had mentioned my name. He had never thought about it until then.
"Are you interested in coming back?"
"Of course I would be..."
"Right, leave it with me..."
