Man Utd boss encouraging Valencia to score more goals

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping Manchester United's style of play enables summer signing Antonio Valencia to improve on his strike record of only seven goals in 89 games for Wigan. The 23 year old opened his Red Devils account in Wednesday's 2-1 pre-season victory over Boca Juniors in the Audi Cup.

"It was Valencia's first game and we are very satisfied," explained Ferguson.

"His goalscoring record at Wigan was not a good one. But he has athleticism and great power in his shooting. We have to think why he has not scored more goals.

"Maybe the way we play will give him more opportunities and he will get more goals. He created a good goal for himself in this game.

"He opened the space up for himself well so we are pleased and he will play in a lot of games this season."
