Wayne Rooney will be sidelined for up to three weeks after injuring his knee in training for Manchester United.
The England striker damaged ligaments at the end of the final session before Wednesday's dramatic 4-3 victory over Newcastle United with Sir Alex Ferguson revealing the reason for his absence at Old Trafford.
"It was a volley towards the end of training. He did a ligament at the back of his knee and could be out for two to three weeks," he told MUTV.
Rooney is expected to miss Premier League fixtures against West Bromwich Albion, Wigan Athletic and Liverpool and the FA Cup third-round meeting with West Ham United.
