Germany skipper Bastian Schweinsteiger could miss the European Championship finals through injury, according to Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.

"Bastian has a tragic injury," he said of the midfielder's knee problem. "The expectations are not so good in relation to Euros. He has to work hard for it. He wants to play and I hope he can reach that. It shall be difficult."

The 31 year old injured a knee on international duty with Germany in training before the 3-2 friendly defeat by England.
