Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is set to make the bench for their clash with Liverpool.

The Mirror says it is understood the England striker has now resumed light training from a light knee injury and has a chance of being on the bench for the clash with arch-rivals Liverpool.

United manager Alex Ferguson had initially ruled Rooney out for a further two weeks, meaning he would miss Sunday's Old Trafford encounter.

But Rooney's progress has been such that the 27-year-old could make his long-awaited return this weekend, albeit as a substitute.
