Man Utd ace Rooney admits England scoring record on his mind

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney admits England's goalscoring record is on his mind.

Rooney netted his 47th international goal against Lithuania at Wembley on Friday to move one goal behind Gary Lineker and two adrift of the nation's all-time record scorer Sir Bobby Charlton.

He said: "It is always at the back of my mind, there is no getting away from it.

"If it happens then I will speak more about it but I just want to do well and score goals that help us win games.

"It's getting so close now it feels like it will happen. I hope so. I still feel I have a good few years left playing for England so I'd like to think I can get three goals in those years.

"It would be a great thing to achieve and then I will try to push on even further.

"I appreciate everyone is rooting for me, including Gary Lineker and Sir Bobby.

"It is a great achievement that has stood for many years and many players have played for England and tried to reach that record but I am in a great position to do that.

"The main aim is to keep progressing with the team and hopefully my goals help us to do that."
