Man Utd academy chief Butt to manage UEFA Youth League team

Manchester United academy chief Nicky Butt will be in charge of the U19 team for the UEFA Youth League this season.

United will field an Under-19 side, with three over-aged outfield players allowed, in the European competition, in which the fixtures will mirror the senior side's Champions League group schedule, following the draw on 24 August.

Speaking to MUTV at the recent Austrian training camp in Obertraun, Butt explained his position as Head of Academy and his plans for 2017/18.

"It's a really good job and one I'm honoured to have," he explained to MUTV. "Working for Manchester United at any level is a great job and I'm doing what I love - football. Watching kids develop from an early age, getting them close to the first team and over the finish line is something I'm really keen to do.

"It starts at a young age and it's really important I get around all the age groups and interact with the coaches to get smooth pathways in all the age groups. We do that really well, don't get me wrong, but, as the head of it, I need to be more in tune with what's going on.

"Last year, Warren [Joyce] left and I took over the Under-23s, which was hard to do, so the big thing at the minute is to get back and start planning everything out. I'll take the Under-19s team and I'm looking forward to that as it keeps my eye in."
