Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland has revealed the reasons behind his new shaved hairstyle.

He said: "I was so upset when we came back from that really ridiculous and bizarre 8-1 defeat at Middlesbrough on the final day of the season. I sat in the garden and decided things had to change.

"One of the things I decided to do - along with changing my training - was to shave my head.

"It was like a line in the sand if you like.

"I have had to fight to get in the team this season and I still feel I can get better.

"I never wanted to leave City. I just want to go from strength to strength here. When I got in the side it was up to me to make sure I took my chance. Now I hope to continue to produce consistent performances."
