Manchester City are ready to bid big for Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe.

The Sunday Mirror says City will attempt to strengthen their strike force by tempting Portsmouth with a £20 million offer for their England striker Defoe.

City, now backed by the big money of the Abu Dhabi United group, made an enquiry for former West Ham and Spurs goalscorer Defoe on deadline day of the August transfer window.

But at the time they found that Pompey, and boss Harry Redknapp, were reluctant sellers.

Now, new financial restraints at Fratton Park could lead to re-think by the FA Cup holders.
