The Aston Villa boss is ready to battle it out with Manchester City for the 6ft 4ins FC Copenhagen centre-back.
Hangeland is also wanted by Newcastle, but O'Neill is keen to sign the 29-year-old as he faces up to losing Liam Ridgewell.
