Manchester City eased into the Europa League Group Stages with a 3-0 aggregate win over Timisoara following a routine 2-0 win at Eastlands. Shaun Wright-Phillips scored the opener just before half time and Dedryck Boyata added a second after the break as City progressed without really being extended.
Manchester City made seven changes from the team which defeated Liverpool on Monday night and for the bulk of the first half these wholesale changes made by Roberto Mancini were clear to see.
City leading one-nil from the first leg dominated for long periods but created few chances as their Romanian opponents defended in depth.
Timisoara found their defensive duties made easier by the laboured build-up of their hosts who flattered to deceive.
Nigel de Jong found the target on ten minutes and then the home support had to wait until the 35th minute before a Jo header was palmed over by Costel Pantilimon and signalled some concerted home pressure.
From the resulting corner Micah Richards effort was scrambled clear. Then Emmanuel Adebayor was clean through but dragged his shot wide of the far post.
The Romanian's finally cracked just before the break as Patrick Vieira's clever ball into the path of Wright-Phillips was instantly dispatched past a flat footed keeper.
Timisoara's sole attempt on goal was Mircea Axente's shot into the side netting.
The second half City showed more urgency and it paid dividends on 58 minutes as the busy David Silva whipped in a free kick to the far post and Boyata open his account for the home team.
Moments later and a horrendous defensive mistake by Ovidiu Burca allowed Adebayor to poke the ball wide of an open goal.
City continued to press against demoralised opposition even if the small band of vociferous Romanian supporters tried to encourage their team.
With the game now decided City were content to play possession football although David Silva did sting the hands of the keeper with a fierce shot. Timisoara for their part it was a case of damage limitation.
