Manchester City are ready to surrender in their battle with Real Madrid for Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.

The Daily Star says City opened talks with Napoli and Cavani's representatives several months ago about a possible £55m deal. But the billionaires are all set to abandon their hopes of signing him.

Cavani has made it clear he wants to join Real Madrid instead and is expected to complete a move to the Bernabeu next month.

City know they cannot compete with Real when it comes to tradition and history.
