Man City's Kompany wins Player of the Year award

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has been named the Barclays Premier League Player of the Year for the 2011/12 season.

The Belgian centre-back has been rock-solid in defence for the league leaders this season and has been rewarded for his performances as City prepare to win their final match of the campaign which would yield them the Premiership.

Kompany has made 30 appearances for City, who have conceded just 27 goals this season, and has scored on three occasions with the most important goal being his headed effort in the 1-0 home win over title rivals Manchester United on April 30.
