Man City's Bellamy: Man Utd wanted me

Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy has revealed that crosstown rivals Manchester United made a move for him during the summer transfer window.

The 31-year old, currently on loan with Championship club Cardiff City, has hinted that United came in for him when his name popped up in regards to a transfer away from Eastlands.

"City ran the risk that I may go to one of their rivals," said Bellamy. "Garry Cook said it was the most phone calls he had ever had about one player and that I should take it as a compliment.

"I said that I would, but it was ironic that everybody wanted me apart from the club I was already at. He said he couldn't do anything about that.

"Someone else came in from above them [Tottenham] as well, which would have caused a few stirs. If I'd said I wanted to go there for one minute, my life in Manchester would have been really tough.

"I ain't gonna say anything, but it would have been tough. It would have been a miracle had it come off. I sat down with my agent and tried to work out whether to hold out for that one or go home.

"Because of the other club being interested, City panicked and pushed the Cardiff thing through as quickly as possible. It takes a certain type of person to drop a division."
