Stevan Jovetic has made it clear that Manchester City are determined to move past the Champions League group stage this season.

The Montenegrin striker joined City from Fiorentina in the summer and is aware that the Eastlands club has struggled in their first two forays into Europe’s premier club competition, however, he now feels that Manuel Pellegrini's squad is strong enough to force its way out of Group D.

"We were a strong team before, and now with Fernandinho, [Jesus] Navas, [Alvaro] Negredo and myself, we're even stronger," Jovetic told UEFA.com.

"We can definitely compete for our targets: the Premier League title and to go as far as possible in the Champions League.

"The first two seasons they didn’t make it out of the group but it was difficult for them. Last season it was also difficult being in the same group as Real Madrid, Dortmund and Ajax.

"But now we have two years of experience and hope to go through."

City kick off their Champions League campaign with a trip to the Czech Republic to take on Viktoria Plzen ahead of future Group D meetings with Bayern Munich and CSKA Moscow.
