Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has spoken of rejecting Manchester United.

The former Borussia Dortmund star made a winning start to life at the Etihad in last month's Champions League thrashing of Borussia Monchengladbach.

Asked if there was any truth behind United's rumoured interest in prizing him away from Borussia Dortmund, Gundogan told the Telegraph: "It was not the biggest lie."

And he followed that up by explaining the reason behind his decision to stay in his native Germany when the 20-time top flight champions came calling.

"Two years ago, three years ago it was not the time," he said.

"I had a contract at Dortmund and I was not thinking of leaving the club so it was not a discussion."
