Manchester City are making a surprise bid for Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila.

The France international has attracted interest from Arsenal and Tottenham this week, though appeared set to remain at Rennes at the beginning of business today.

However, French sources say City have now opened talks with Rennes over a fee for M'Vila.

City boss Roberto Mancini is anxious about his squad depth after losing Nigel de Jong to AC Milan last night.
