A lacklustre performance from Manchester City saw them gain a fortunate home point against Paris St Germain at Eastlands. Manchester City were already guaranteed a place in the last 32 of the Uefa Cup but boss Mark Hughes wanted his team to finish top of the group and avoid a Champions League team in the next phase.

And it all started brightly for City against PSG who are bottom of the group and needed a result to keep their slender hopes of progressing alive.

Elano fed a wonderful ball inside the full back for Daniel Sturridge whose first touch let him down and Landreau saved. The ball rebounds to Elano who shot first time but the PSG keeper is equal to it.

City were passing the ball around well with some purpose but the French visitors defended in depth and as the first half wore on the game became scrappy as the home side struggled to find their way through a congested midfield.

PSG boss Paul Le Guen had freely admitted Ligue 1 was his priority for the season as his team, whilst looking comfortable on the ball rarely threatened the City rearguard until the final minute of the half.

Zabaleta had just forced a save from Landreau when PSG broke quickly through Luyindula who skipped three tackles before cutting the ball back for Mateja Kezman who seemed certain to test City keeper Joe Hart until Tal Ben-Haim made a vital block.

In the second period City faded badly after starting at an increased tempo. Darius Vassell drove over when well placed then Sturridge had a half chance charged down.

Sadly for Hughes that was as good as it got as PSG dragged themselves back into the game and should really have won as they pinned the home side back for long periods.

Twice the dangerous Luyindula almost broke the deadlock and in the last minute Camara failed to connect with his head from close range.

PSG looked the more composed outfit in this half as City ran out of ideas and were clinging on for the point at the final whistle.

The City chief was pragmatic with the result, being happy with the point.

"On the balance of play we didn't create a great deal. PSG made it difficult for us, getting men behind the ball and soaking up our pressure.

"We just couldn't unlock the door in that final third but we kept going and were careful not to over commit as they were very dangerous on the counter attack.

"We'll take the point as we are guaranteed at least second position and if we get a result in (Racing) Santander we'll finish top of the pile."
