Defender Eliaquim Mangala says he expects to battle it out for a starting spot at a club such as Manchester City.
The France international joined City from FC Porto last summer for £32million - a record fee for a centre-half - which has since been surpassed by the £33m signing of Nicolas Otamendi from Valencia.
Mangala has kicked off the new campaign brightly for City but is well aware that he will have to continue on if he is to keep former Porto teammate Otamendi out of the line-up.
"I know Nico very well from our two years together at Porto," he told reporters.
"It's normal because City is a great club which is looking to bounce back from last season."
