Man City captain Vincent Kompany shocked by England failure

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany wasn't surprised by England's Euros humiliation.

Kompany believes that there was a mental aspect to the Iceland defeat, which brought the curtain down on Roy Hodgson's time in charge.

"I thought England would show their quality against Iceland, but what I saw was an extreme kind of collective failure. Looking from the outside, I honestly can't work out how it happened," he wrote in The Times.

"England had one of the strongest squads at Euro 2016 and yet something happened on Monday, a psychological 'event', to cause them to perform like that. It looked like something got to them."

Kompany believes England must adopt a more traditional style of play if they are to enjoy success at international level.

"I want to see an England team playing like an England team – playing at speed, playing to their strengths, being physical, being resilient," he continued. "If England are to be successful, they need to get back to doing some of the things they do best."
