Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is joining the battle for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez.

Both Barcelona and Bayern Munich have lodged bids for the Spanish defensive utility, though they have fallen short of Bilbao's valuation.

The Times says Mancini is also chasing Martinez as he seeks defensive cover.

The youngster can play in midfield and also at centre-half.
