Man City boss Hughes: Toughest UEFA Cup in recent years

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes believes this season's UEFA Cup could be the most competitive in it's history.

"Omonia are top of their league in the early stages and will be no pushover that's for sure," he declared ahead of tonight's clash in Cyprus.

"They had a great result in the last round against a fancied team in AEK Athens so we know we are in for a real contest.

"The stadium is compact and irrespective of how many they get in there it is always incredibly noisy. They are passionate fans over here, they love their football and I am sure the stadium will be packed with 20,000 fans.

"Most fans in Cyprus follow Omonia's progress and given how much we have been in the news recently it will be a big game all around. We are expecting a fervent atmosphere but after the weekend we like a good atmosphere. We have been studying tapes of the opposition and we know they will be organised and will not make it easy for us.

"We will have to play well to progress and though it is a cliché there really are no easy games in the competition. We want to get into the group stages at least. Then you are guaranteed a number of games against some top class opposition and you can gauge where you stand.

"There are some crack sides in the competition this year. It is a very strong UEFA Cup, perhaps as tough to win as it has ever been. It seems to get a better competition and stronger in depth season by season. Whoever wins it will have to be a very good side and a very durable and adaptable one.

"We hope to get to the latter stages of all the cups we are in this season. Winning things is what the game is all about.

"I am sure that we will get stronger as the season progresses and the UEFA Cup in particular is geared towards a side that can do that. The key to sustaining a challenge is keeping everyone fit and improving all the time on our basic skills.

"We are not prioritising. You have to take one game at time and prepare as conscientiously as we can for each match. That doesn't change whether it is Europe, Brighton away or a Premier League game."
