Man City boss Eriksson plays down Ireland disappointment

Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson was happy with the reaction of his substitutes in their clash with Bolton on Saturday.

He told City's website: "Nothing happened when he came off, and when we have players like Elano and (Felipe) Caicedo on the bench then I think you have to give them half an hour to see if they can create something.

"They both created chances, and Stephen (Ireland) was disappointed but that's football."

Elano's display when he did get onto the pitch at the Reebok earned praise from Eriksson, who added: "He was disappointed when I told him on Friday that he was not starting, and that's fair. I think it will make him play even better when we play Birmingham next weekend.

"When he's on the ball, he can control it so well and normally something happens when he is on the pitch. He had a couple of shots that forced saves after he came on at Bolton and he did well."
