Mainz forward Okazaki leads the way for Asians in Europe

FSV Mainz star Shinji Okazaki is the leading goalscorer for players from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) competing in the top leagues in Europe.

The 27-year old Japanese forward has netted nine goals in 19 German Bundesliga appearances for Mainz to sit at the top of the list of Asian players.

Behind Okazaki is South Korea international Son Heung-min who scored his eighth goal for Bayer Leverkusen on the weekend allowing to move three clear of Inter Milan wingback Yuto Nagatomo of Japan, who has five goals in Italy's Serie A, and Mike Havenaar also on five in the Dutch Eredivisie for Vitesse Arnhem.

Following the runaway top three is a group of players on two goals led by South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-yueng who has netted twice in the Premier League for Sunderland while on loan from Swansea City.

In second divisions around Europe, Australia's Mathew Leckie leads the way with six goal for FSV Frankfurt in the 2.Bundesliga ahead of Japan's Tuki Otsu, who has four for VVV-Venlo in the Dutch Eerste Divisie, VfL Bochum's Yusuke Tasaka with three in Germany's second tier and English Championship pair Scott McDonald from Millwall and Tommy Smith from Ipswich Town who also have three.
