Vurnon Anita believes that new manager Steve McClaren will help Newcastle United reach new heights this season.

There is a wave of optimism surrounding the north east club at the moment following the appointment of McClaren as manager earlier in the summer.

McClaren seems to have already made a lasting impression on the players and midfielder Anita feels that the former England boss will be able to guide the Magpies through a successful campaign by bringing out the best in every member of the squad.

Anita told the Chronicle: "With this manager I think it will bring the best out of everybody in terms of how he wants to play and style of play in general.

"I have played against him and his team FC Twente at that time and they did very well. He is a very, very good manager. I think we are reaching again for the top 10.

"It's important to start well and keep things up. The basics have to be set now in pre-season along with the way of playing because everything has changed. We need to train hard and be up for it."
