Mad Dog: England should ignore Man Utd's Rooney for World Cup

Former QPR star Malcolm Allen feels Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney should be left at home for this summer's World Cup.

Mad Dog wrote in the Daily Mail: "We've got no chance of winning the World Cup. Since I was a boy, every World Cup has come along, and apart from the team which Bobby Robson put together, we've never got close.

"Bobby had the outstanding Gazza, and now all we have is a slowing down Wayne Rooney. I think he's past his best. Sir Alex Ferguson was showing him the door in his last season at Manchester United.

"I'd rather have Steven Gerrard playing deep - like an NFL quarterback - in a similar role to Andrea Pirlo with the experienced Frank Lampard and James Milner supporting the young players on and off the pitch."
