MacMath admits surprise at Philadelphia Union's draft selection of Blake

Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath admits he was surprised when his club drafted another keeper in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

The Union used pick number one to bring in Andre Blake from the University of Connecticut despite the fact that 22-year old MacMath has made the position his own over the past couple of seasons.

Despite the decision to draft Blake, current number one MacMath can understand why Philly have added some quality competition to the playing roster.

"I was a little bit surprised," he told MLSsoccer.com.

"But obviously I understand why they picked him. He's a very good goalkeeper with a lot of potential and someone that's going to push me.

"That's the whole point of drafting him. I'm already working with him and it's going well."

MacMath, who has had a number of training spells with Premier League club Everton, added: "Any time you have a competition, it pushes people to be better.

"Obviously I want to go out there and have the best year that I can have and kind of prove to myself that I'm the goalkeeper that I think I am."
