Macleod has a fantastic opportunity at Rangers - McDowall

Rangers assistant manager Kenny McDowall suggests the clubs youngsters, such as Lewis Macleod, have a fantastic opportunity to develop into quality players.

McDowall, who spent a decade with Old Firm rivals Celtic, believes young guns at Ibrox will get a much better chance to prove themselves in the lower divisions before the club returns to the Scottish Premier League in the coming years.

"I was at Celtic for 10 years and had some fantastic boys in my reserves but they couldn't get near the first team because of how good Celtic were at the time," McDowall told the Daily Record.

"This is an unbelievable opportunity for the Rangers boys to stake a claim and clock up some games.

"Lewis has probably been fortunate because where we are has speeded up his development.

"But that is not to say he wouldn't have been coming off the bench or starting the odd game if we were still in the top flight.

"In terms of handling a 50,000 crowd - like last year when you are 2-1 down to Annan - that says a lot about your character.

"People just don't realise how big a deal that is. That is a lot for a kid to deal with and some of them might not come back from that.

"It can do nothing for Lewis bar make him a better player."
