MacDonald eyeing top management job after leaving Villa

Departing Aston Villa coach Kevin MacDonald is eyeing a management return.

The Birmingham Mail says MacDonald was caretaker boss of Villa following Martin O'Neill's exit two summer ago, but was passed over for the full-time job in favour of Gerard Houllier.

It is believed MacDonald, a league and FA Cup double winner with Liverpool in 1986, rues the missed opportunity after damaging defeats to Newcastle and Rapid Vienna and an overly-modest view of his own credentials.

He also expressed an interest in the latest vacancy to replace McLeish.

MacDonald has been linked with management jobs elsewhere and was under strong consideration for the Nottingham Forest role last year.
