Former Manchester United star Lou Macari has warned the club's starlets they must "buck their ideas up" or face being dumped after this week's Carling Cup humiliation by Coventry City.

"The manager was disappointed and, if he had his way, the daily routine of the youngsters would be a lot tougher," said Macari. "The game has changed so much. A lot of young players are molly-coddled and that's not the way he likes it.

"Young players are given a lot of money at a very young age and aren't really having to push themselves to achieve that.

"That ends up with a disappointing result like the one against Coventry. So maybe it's a wake-up call.

Some are certainly going to have to buck their ideas up."
