But demands by Grenier's agent mean that Newcastle still have a lot of work to do to snare the 23-year-old.
Sources in France told the People: "Like Cabaye, Grenier can play right-midfield, as an attacking midfielder and in the hole.
"He has been talking to the Newcastle lads at the French World Cup training camp and he is keen to go to St James' Park. But his agent will demand wages that he feels are appropriate for a player who is going to Brazil."
Newcastle's top earner is skipper Fabricio Coloccini on £65,000 a week. Toon hope to get Grenier on slightly less.
