Luton boss Blackwell delighted to dump Sunderland

Luton boss Kevin Blackwell was cock-a-hoop as the Hatters thumped Sunderland 3-0 in last night's Carling Cup clash.

A 3-0 victory was some sweet revenge for Sunderland's 5-0 win on the ground in May, a performance which clinched the Coca-Cola Championship for Roy Keane's team against the relegated Hatters.

"I think that went a long way towards repaying the fans for the 5-0 result," said a delighted Blackwell.

"That was a terrific performance from a very good Luton side.

"That was a strong team Sunderland had out, but we played on the front foot all night. Paul Furlong was inspirational, but from one to 11 they all did a great job.

"Our keeper had one shot to save and he saved it. But one result means nothing - we've got to continue this in the league. Four wins out of five augurs well, though.

"Their winning the Championship here 5-0 was like somebody winning the lottery and coming into your house to celebrate when you've got a losing ticket.

"They came here a fully confident, buoyant side and our youngsters were taught a lesson. I'm delighted that those who played again tonight learnt that lesson.

"Cup games are a one-off, but the way we played was a bit more comprehensive than a lucky cup night. A lot of people would have wondered who were the Premier League side."
