Romelu Lukaku has credited Jose Mourinho with persuading him to join Manchester United.

The Belgian was close to joining Chelsea from Everton, but he instead decided to sign with the Red Devils.

Although his close friend Paul Pogba, who he was with in Los Angeles when he signed for United, was a factor in his decision, Lukaku says it was Mourinho's desire to "rebuild the club" that convinced him to sign.

"We were just on holiday together," Lukaku said of the United and France midfielder. "At the end of the day, I had to make my own choices.

"It was the conversation I had with the manager that really convinced me the most, the plans and how he wanted to rebuild the club and he wanted me to be part of it.

"I am grateful for the chance."
