Lucarelli: Parma can act as warning to rivals

Parma captain Alessandro Lucarelli hopes the club's demise can serve as a warning to others.

Parma called off its last two Serie A games amid a financial meltdown, but agreed to get back on to the pitch against Atalanta today after a bailout package worth €5m was agreed.

Cesena are the only club to have voted against the bailout, while Napoli, Sassuolo and Roma abstained.

"In order to change we don't just need Parma to ask for this, but all of the clubs. We must make the most of Parma's situation and use it to guarantee this never happens again."

The players had refused to play not because they hadn't received wages since July 2014, but to ensure all employees of the club and the history of Parma Calcio was protected.

"We want to become guarantors for a change in the Federal rules. If we only thought about our wages then we'd have stopped playing months ago.

"We're the only squad in the world that plays top flight football for free, as we haven't been paid a salary since July.

"I ask for everyone to support our fight so that what happened at Parma can never be allowed again. The club changed three Presidents and was also given a points penalty on top of that.

"The rules for evaluating the financial stability of Serie A clubs need to change."
