Lowry free-kick gains Bale-like comparisons as Millwall down Charlton

Shane Lowry scored a sublime free-kick as Millwall beat London rivals Charlton Athletic 2-0 in the Championship on the weekend.

The FA Cup semi-finalists moved to 14th on England's tier two table with a vital away win at The Valley with Australian defender Lowry producing a deadly set-piece effort from more than 30 yards to add to Jermaine Easter's opener.

The 64th-minute goal clinched the win for the Lions and prompted manager Kenny Jackett to draw loose comparisons with Tottenham superstar Gareth Bale.

"I can't say he's been practising that but it he showed fantastic confidence," said Jackett.

"There was no disguise on it or a runner over the ball - he just took the responsibility and did it on the day.

"It was a fantastic free-kick - the keeper had no chance.

"If I sit here and compare Shane to Gareth Bale people would have a field day but it's one thing doing it on the training ground and taking one in front of a crowd."

Addicks boss Chris Powell added: "Of course goals change games and we ended up chasing it. It was an outstanding goal by Shane Lowry and we ended up losing.

"We created the better chances but you have to take the ones that come your way. It didn't happen through good defending, good goalkeeping or us not hitting the target. We have just got to soldier on."
