Lotito insists Lazio can finish in Champions League places

Lazio president Claudio Lotito insists they can still qualify for the Champions League.

Lazio are battling with AS Roma for the final qualifying place.

"On May 12 1974 Lazio beat Foggia 1-0 thanks to a Giorgio Chinaglia penalty, being crowned champions of Italy for the first time in their history," wrote Lotito in a statement.

"This had been unthinkable until that moment, achieved by an extraordinary group led by an extraordinary Coach, Tommaso Maestrelli.

"Today my mind goes back to those memorable days. We have three very difficult matches left in this season's journey and we have the chance to take the Champions League dream that nobody expected at the start of the campaign.

"On top of that, we have already secured the right to play the Coppa Italia Final and the Italian Super Cup.

"We will give our all, that is certain. I am convinced that the whole squad, the staff and Coach Stefano Pioli will know how to embrace the spirit of '74 to face every single encounter with humility, team spirit, sacrifice and strong determination that 41 years ago took us to victory."
