LOAN WATCH: Chelsea defender Baba Rahman scores Schalke winner

Baba Rahman was the hero for Schalke in their opening Europa League fixture on Thursday night.

The 22-year-old Ghanaian defender, who joined the German club on a season-long from Chelsea in the summer, scored the only goal of the contest as Schalke defeated French side OGC Nice 1-0 at the Allianz Riviera.

Rahman played a full 90 minutes at left-back and helped Schalke keep Nice's attack, led by Mario Balotelli, relatively quiet while getting forward to deliver the killer blow in the 75th minute.

The former Greuther Furth and FCAugsburg ace played a clever one-two with Tottenham Hotspur target Max Meyer, receiving a cut-back pass in the area, before unleashing a fierce drive inside Yoan Cardinale's near post.

Former Liverpool striker Balotelli, who netted a brace on his Nice debut on the weekend, was close to levelling for the home side but was denied by Schalke gloveman Ralf Fahrmann.
