LOAN WATCH: Arsenal young gun Afobe on target for Sheffield Wednesday

Benik Afobe managed to open his goalscoring account for loan club Sheffield Wednesday on the weekend.

The 20-year old striker, who joined the Owls from Arsenal on January 30, was making his second start when hitting the back of the net in the 2-0 win at Reading on Saturday.

Royals defender Alex Pearce was sent off inside ten minutes, giving the visitors a penalty, which was subsequently tucked home by Chris Maguire.

Wednesday had to wait until just before the hour-mark to score the inevitable second goal and it came when Afobe was on hand to slot home from close range when Royals keeper Alex McCarthy fumbled Maguire's effort.

Wednesday boss Stuart Gray said he was appreciative to Arsenal for allowing England U21 international Afobe join his side.

"I'm grateful to Arsenal for letting us have Afobe. He's got real talent and caused Reading a lot of problems with his pace and power," he said.

"But it's not really fair to pick out individuals. It was a collective team performance. With a bit better finishing, we could have finished them off earlier."

The win extended the 17th-placed Owls' unbeaten streak to eight league games, and 11 in all competitions, allowing them to move nine points clear of the relegation zone.
