LMA (League Managers Association) chief executive John Barnwell has admitted his organisation would prefer it if the FA did not look abroad to appoint the new England boss.
He said: "Our position is very clear. We would prefer an English manager or domestic manager - but prefer is the word.
"We are flexible enough to understand if, in the right people's opinion, there is a foreign coach above everyone else then we would support him. We wouldn't have an issue."
Barnwell has urged the FA not to rush into a decision and evaluate all options carefully, taking advice from people with international experience and of the English domestic game.
"There is no need to rush things," he said. "They should take their time and get the right man.
"They should be consulting people who have international management experience.
"They shouldn't be speaking with players, they should not be speaking with Franz Beckenbauer - supposedly. What's he got to do with picking an England manager?
"It needs to be people who have been at the coalface and know what the job is about and have a connection to England.
"Being the most successful doesn't guarantee success for England.
"What is the difference from managing an England team from managing a club side? There are a host of things and the only people that really know that are people that have done the job."
